I'm really excited to be able to tell you about Amanda Rockwell's Designer Brush Workshop! I mentioned in a post previously that I was able to be a "tester" for a workshop she was developing. It's now available for purchase in her store at Scrapbookgraphics! If you've ever wanted to make your own texture brushes, or wanted to know how it's done, this is for you!

You get to download everything! All the videos she's made and the instructional pdfs to refer to. You will learn how to make shabby/texture/smudge/blending brushes like a pro! You will learn what materials work best, how to use them and where to find them!

After this workshop, you will never look at black Tempura paint and toilet paper the same way you did before the workshop! LOL! Literally nothing is safe from being painted!

She's just started working on the second workshop and I'm "testing" that with her as well -- and let me tell you, the first video of the second workshop is fantastic as well.

Announcing . . . . A New Store!

Not just a new store for me -- but a brand, new store! Hummie, of Hummies World, wanted to add a store to her already extensive site (best place to learn to use Photoshop Elements with all her tutorials and classes). Check out what's available in the store!

Jodiann (Jodiann's Sky Pie) and I accepted the challenge and have been having fun behind the scenes, loading products into the store, and even making the first store collab. The store has been open for a couple of weeks, and our early shoppers have helped us find bugs and get things fixed. So are you ready for the Grand Opening? It's this Friday, Feb 10! And we have fun stuff planned for you!

Commercial Use Goodies -- Brand New

First post of the new year -- I know, I'm a slacker here! But the truth is, I've been busy creating lots of new commercial use products, mostly texture packs. I cleaned out closets and found some old folded paper bags and fell in love with the wrinkles so that got me started. I came across some sheets sheets of handmade paper, so there's a small pack of those, and some packs of yummy kraft paper.

I was also a tester for a fabulous designer's new brush class that will be coming soon, so I learned some new techniques, and had a blast getting messy with paint and other supplies. So as if my stash wasn't big enough already, I'm now collecting all sorts of odd bits and pieces of stuff to save for brush-making. Hubby now actually has "a look" when he sees me stashing some of this stuff, LOL!

Everything is available at Digidesignresort and theStudio. So let me show you what you'll find.

Christmas Carol Blog Hop at theStudio

What a fun bloghop you have in store! You'll follow the designers' blogs and find mini kits representing some of the best loved Christmas songs and traditional carols.

I chose the song Away in a Manger because it's one of my favorites, but when my daughter sent me a text with the dates for both grand daughters' Christmas pageants, I started remembering them. The little productions at the school use all kinds of homemade props, costumes and stick figures, and when I saw these doodles, I knew I had to use them for this mini kit.

You can also print these so your little ones can make ornaments, or play with their own nativities.

You'll want to be sure to go to the Blog at Digidesignresort. If you've never visited there, you will be surprised at the amazing amount of content, particularly free tutorials -- almost all of them videos! Store owner, Monja, and I were talking about what we could add to the list and I thought -- we haven't done tutorials on using templates. And Templates are very rare to show up as newsletter freebies.

So I said I would make a set of four templates to be given out through the advent time, and she would make a video tutorial to go with each one. I told her what would be unique about the template so she could focus the video on that -- and today the first template and video tutorials arrived!

It's very basic, opening the template, checking the layers, turning them on and off -- pretty simple. The template is free or you can purchase the Framed Template set in my store if you miss one.

Each one comes in psd or tif formats, as well as 12x12 square, or 8.5x11 size. Remember that psd files can be opened and used in PSP (several of my Creative ladies use only PSP), and the 8.5x11 is very close and easily sized to fit the European A4 size.

I've been busy having some fun this week working with Deli Scraps by Min, creating a delicious autumn-ish collab! It started because we were doing speed scraps almost back to back this weekend (hers is tomorrow, Sunday, Sept 11 at 3 p,m EST in theStudio Chatroom), and decided to use the same palette for our prize minis. Once we got going, we decided to make a huge collab! Wait till you see!

Rectangular Album Templates

Do you scrap in rectangles? I've just put a set of album templates in my shop at Digidesignresort, and it's available in my shop at the Studio too!

These are US letter size (8.5x11 inches) with even margins all the way around. This makes is so easy to flip or rotate these templates to suit your photos. You don't have move the blocks around, and you don't have to worry about losing part of your photo in the center binding when you print it as a book.

Album Pages for Lots of Small Photos

When you're creating an album, sometimes you have a lot of small photos from a day or event. And you just can't bear the idea of not showing all of them! Well, here is your solution -- Album Square, Small Photos pages with many little blocks for those photos! And I still left some room for you to be able to tell the story that goes with the photos.

What Do You Do with a Lot of Photos?

Do you have so many photos from a vacation, or trip, or event, you don't know quite how to get them together? Do you have a new baby, or grandbaby, or a wedding, or maybe an annual album you'd like to create? Well, here's your answer to creating an album quickly! A set of 10 album page templates plus a cover.

You can easily clip your photos to the blocks on the template page. And remember, even though I have blocks there that you can put photos into, you could journal, or use pieces of paper or other embellishments in those spaces instead. If you need more than 10 pages for your album, use these over and over. There is an even margin around all four edges, so that if you decide to turn the template 90 degrees or flip it to suit your photos, you can do that without having to shift the blocks around to accommodate a right or left page. And you also don't have to worry about losing parts of your photos in the binding in the center if you print the photo album.

If you want to get them printed into a photo book (12x12 is expensive to print), what I have done is create the pages at that size, then resize the page down to 8x8. I've printed books in that 8x8 size that way and it works perfectly.

I have included psd files, and a set of TIF files -- you can choose the format you prefer. Did you know that you can open psd files in Paint Shop Pro? The later versions open those files without any problem at all! My Creative Ladies would know -- some of them use PSP.

I can't wait to show you what my fabulous Creative Ladies have done!! I sent these templates to them, and less than 12 hours later (seriously!), Irma had made a whole album using all of the templates! Take a look at a weekend trip they took. Aren't these fabulous pages?! (oh, and she uses PSP)

The Contest Results, the Bundle, and NSD Sale

I hit the ground running this morning at work, going from meeting to meeting, then lunch meeting. About 2 pm, I finally checked my personal email, and found a bunch of emails from my wonderful creative Ladies saying I had won the contest at theStudio. I hadn't heard anything, so I went over to the forum, looked around, didn't see anything. Couldn't find anything about it.

Back to my inbox, there was a PM from Toiny, the owner, telling me that I had won the contest there! And a Wacom tablet would be coming my way! Woohoo! I'm so happy!

So, the entire kit, plus extras is now in the store. On a Whim

Last week, I found a post about the Spring Fling events at theStudio, starting with speed scraps. I was curious to see how they did them since I do them all the time too. Well, another of their events was a designer contest running four weeks with prizes each week, and if you participated with entries all four weeks you were eligible to win a Wacom tablet. Well, count me in then!

The theme is wedding, we could choose our own palettes, but must follow the rules. I chose a really soft, fairly neutral palette. So last week's entry was a dozen papers with the winner announced on Saturday -- and was I shocked -- it was me! They are available in the gallery there at theStudio. There are entries from lots of others in a wide variety of colors and styles. Some of the designers are also playing along -- and their kits are free as well. I've linked you to the main gallery page because there are four sub-galleries so far with paper packs and element packs, so be sure to check each one. And here are my papers.

So did I mention element packs? The pack of 30 elements was due tonight so I finally finished mine and posted the link to them. Here they are.

There are still two weeks to go and we have no idea what assignment is coming next! So go ahead and pick them up now while they're free, because shortly they will be going into my shop.

New in the Store, and Speed Scraps

I decided to put the texture brushes I made to make papers in the store. Do you love adding texture to your papers? I just love rich texture and a little bit of grunge! So I decided to share the brushes I use on my papers. These were created from photos I've taken, or fabrics I have scanned. And since I like large brushes, they are large. The smallest one is 1116 pixels and the largest one is just under 2500 pixels. Tested in both Windows and Mac versions of Photoshop. Created in CS5 at 300 dpi from very high pixel image files.
Included is a single .abr (brush) file to be installed in Photoshop. This file will not work in other software. But I've included a folder full of the pngs of these brushes so you can play with them in the software you have.

And here's a sample paper I made to show you how they work -- it is not included in the zip folder. But isn't it pretty? If you like it softer than this, go to filter>gaussian blur and blur it a bit. Ooh, lovely!

It's that time again! Join me for a speed scrap!

We will have our usual chat, create a gorgeous page, and we'll have a little fun as well, well, probably a lot of fun!

You will need to register in the forum if you haven't already. When you log into the forum -- be sure to check the box "Remember Me." If you don't, the chatroom has a tendency to bump you off in a time out. Firefox works better than any other browser.

Here's a link to the forum thread, and there you will find a time converter -- it's already set to where I live, you just set the day and time (March 11 at 2:00 pm), and click submit. In the next screen, choose your country from the drop down menu, and it magically shows you the time the Speed Scrap starts where you are!

We'll have a set of 7 instructions given out over the first hour and then another hour to complete and post your page following those instructions. There will be lots of fun and chatting in between!

New Photomasks

I've just put a set of photomasks in the store! It's a set of five different masks.

They are so much fun to use! You can clip them to your photos, of course, but have you tried clipping them to papers and then using your blend modes? Or clip to a paper and use as a mat or frame for a photo. Or try filling them with a color or texture. Or even load up some styles (glitter anyone?) and apply some great effects!

Just play and have fun with them!

Flu and Other Stuff

Wow, is all I can say about the flu! I've had it for a over a week, still congested and coughing, and just hard to stay awake and concentrate. I've stayed home from the office, but not away from working -- today's technology is a blessing and a curse.

So, I'm going to close up this last week of January and give you a few hints of things coming up. Ready?

The Blogtrain Blog is launching another run through over 100 designers' blogs with all sorts of beautiful things for you to pick up starting on Feb 1, and you'll need to stop here as well. This is the swatch -- isn't is pretty?

I'll have a couple more CU products to go into the store, and my contribution to the monthly Mix & Match Collection at DigidesignResort. Another hint -- I didn't make a kit this time. But instead, I made something you can use all the time! If you haven't checked out any of those collections, they are really worthwhile taking a look at. Each month is a new color palette and theme, and the designers put their own spin on the kits, just totally fun!

Yes! I wrote my letter -- but in a different sort of way! This is a fun little kit for Christmas and holiday photos. I was inspired by my grand daughter writing her letter to Santa. She spent a great deal of time looking through sale ads and magazines, carefully cutting out pictures of the toys she wanted -- it was just so cute! And she wrote Dear Santa for me, which I scanned for the kit.

Tutorial Using Jodiann Cate's Styles -- Making Plaids

Ok, one of these days I really need to move my blog over to my design name -- Nana Pixels is me, JanetB Designs!

Jodiann is a total delight!! Wonderfully creative and just plain fun to talk to! As I mentioned in my previous post, I've been able to play with her latest 3 sets of styles, Jodiann's CU Christmas Stars, CU Christmas Shine and CU Christmas Stripes. I've linked to the front page of her store at DigiScrapWarehouse so you can see all three products at once.

Now on to the fun! If you look in my previous post, you 'll see the words Merry Christmas. That's actually done in a combination of her Christmas Stars and Christmas Shine. I use Photoshop CS5, and will show you some screenshots as we go along. Ready?

PART ONE

Merry Christmas -- using Christmas Stars and Christmas Shine -- is actually 5 layers:

Start with a transparent layer 12x12 inches at 300 dpi. Select your font (I'm using Tabitha) and type your words -- be sure to choose a font that has a bit of chunkiness to it. If it's not quite thick enough, try making it bold using the type palette on the character tab. I didn't use the same color in both sets of styles. Starting at the bottom and working up to the top layer:

1. Bottom layer is Shine "like a bow" at 20%
2. Layer 2 is Stars "like a bow," pattern scale is 25% and 100% opacity
3. Layer 3 is Stars "like a bow" at 67% opacity
4. Layer 4 is Stars "portly" at 67% opacity (yes, I used the slightly darker red color)
5. Top layer is Shine "like a bow" at 50% opacity (if this layer is more opaque there is more of a wet look but you lose the stars underneath. If you lower the opacity more you lose the look of the shine but you can see the stars better)

Here's the screenshot of the words at 100%. You can also see the type palette, circled in yellow, and my layers are labeled for you.

And here are the finished words you can see in the screenshot above. In the sample in my previous post, I used the color "portly" in both sets of styles.

PART TWO -- PLAIDS

Next we're going to use her delicious Christmas Stripes and make plaids!

In very basic terms, you start with a striped paper, duplicate it, turn it 90 degrees, and then reduce the opacity of the top layer -- it's magic!

1. Start with a 12x12 white layer on the bottom, click on whatever color stripe you would like.

2. Add another white layer and place your second stripe color. Place a transparent layer on top of this stripe layer, select both and merge, control-E.

Below, you can see my layers, bottom and top ones have the stripes applied but their effects are dangling, so you can't see them yet. (There's a reason for adding and merging the transparent layer -- you can't manipulate the stripe layer unless you do this. For instance, if as you're working you decide the color has faded and you need to adjust the saturation, it can't be done on the layer with it's effects hanging out -- it has to be a rasterized layer to do that. And you certainly can't do the step below if it's not merged! Go ahead and try to rotate the top layer without merging, you know you want to)

Did you see what happened when you tried to rotate the layer when it wasn't merged with the stripe layer? The layer rotated all right, but the stripes didn't!
Now you can see what happens with the two layers merged -- the stripes appear in the layers palette.

Now I'll add the transparent layer above my top layer and merge and we'll go on to the next step.

3. Go to edit > transform > rotate 90 degrees, then reduce the opacity on this layer to between 42-50% -- your plaid magically appears! So here it is, the gorgeous plaid, and you can see the the stripes and rotation in the layers palette. This has made a wonderful, very even regular plaid.

But what if I like an irregular plaid?

If you're still in the same file, you have two choices right now to do it.
1. The easiest way to do it from the point above is to click on the color layer you want to "stretch out," hold down the shift key to keep it in proportion, and drag the corner out till you're happy with the scale. -or-
2. Undo till you get to the point where you have one stripe layer and the transparent layer unmerged. Double click on the words pattern overlay in the list of effects for that layer, and when the box comes up change the scale to whatever looks good to you (I used 400%). Then merge the stripe and its transparent layer.

Can you see the difference in the scale now between the purple and the turquoise layers?

Now what if you want a different background color instead of the white in the pattern overlay? Ready to have a little more fun?

1. Turn off the visibility of one layer and then zoom way in. Make sure each layer is back to 100% opacity.
2. Take your magic wand tool and click on the white background. Marching ants will appear around those white stripes. Click backspace and they disappear. Zoom way in to have a look -- you might have to do it again with a tiny stripe next to a color stripe if the magic wand didn't get it. The blue arrow is pointing to what was missed. Turn the other layer back on, and repeat this process.

Add a layer at the very bottom, I selected a fill of a light yellow in this sample. Add a yummy texture of some sort and you have an awesome plaid!

Wasn't that fun?? By using the different colors and scaling each layer, you can have an endless variety of plaids -- with white backgrounds, and now with colored backgrounds!

Well actually she has made lots of them, and I have a bunch of them. Over the past couple of weeks, I have had the great privilege of playing with her collection of Christmas styles. They are brand new, come in 30 ( ! ) colors, a wonderful variety to play with on your pages -- and best of all they are ok for commercial use! (Be sure to read through her terms of use.)

Aren't they gorgeous? I made the "Merry Christmas" using both the Stars and the Shine styles. The Stars have some texture, little stars and a bit of music in the pattern. The Shine styles are really not like the glass or epoxy or acrylic styles you have used or seen. They have a wonderful, rich depth of color. I told Jodiann that this shade of red reminded me of the cherry jelly I made this summer.

And now how about these stripes? They are great as they are, but I made plaids with them!

So -- do you want to know how I did it? Come back for a little tutorial.

Charity DVD -- The Artist Studio

This year Digidesignresort wants to make a difference – we want to give something back from all the love you give us through the year, and we want to give something to those who live in poverty, pain and danger – the Haitians. Although they have disappeared from the news they are still suffering from the results of the earthquakes this year. Some weeks ago Monja, our store owner, saw a report on TV and since that day she couldn't forget the eyes of a little girl who is now blind – waiting for help and surgery.

Although these appeals are usually mostly around Christmas – we at Digidesignresort not only want to help over Christmas but with this DVD, we can help over the whole year. We will send our donation to SOS Kinderdorf – a German Charity organization. It´s well known so I´m sure our money will be brought to those who need it most. If you like a look – check out here.

50% of ALL income will go to support SOS Kinderdorf's charity projects in Haiti. Well, my blog has been neglected because of long hours at work. But I've also spent a lot of hours in front of my laptop!

First the big news -- I'll be closing up my shop at DigiScrapsDriveIn on Nov 30. Everything is 35% off till I close my doors.

I'll go back to being exclusive at DigidesignResort -- and I just finished a kit that will be released Dec 1. (I used it for the ad below, just a little sneak peek of it) -- and I'm working on another collab kit as well.

New Kits

I have seriously been busy! Not just at work, but here at my laptop! I have three kits to show you- can you believe it?

First is the beginning of a series of kits called Timeless. They will share a similar color palette and each kit can be used with the others. the first one is called Timeless, a bit of elegance, lace and florals. Timeless Modern has clean lines and is more monochromatic.

Here's a link to time converter -- it's set to my time, you fill in the date and time, July 3 at 2:00 pm, and select where you live from the list on the right, and then you'll know what time it will be for you.

It's at DigidesignResort in the chatroom (the chat button is all the way to the right in the line of quick links at the top of the page.) You will have to register in the forum to participate, because the chatroom requires your forum login to enter.

Now for details, it will last for an hour, and we'll have some questions for you to answer. If you are the first to answer correctly, there will be a little gift for you!!

I Have Blinkies !

Ok, this may not seem like a big deal, after all it's not a kit or anything, but I am so excited about how gorgeous these are! In browsing the forum at DST, I discovered a lady, Michelle, who was going to make a free blinkie for the first three people who replied to her. I was number four, but that didn't matter because I wanted to have three of them made, so I intended to pay her. I just loved her fresh style, and the smooth movement in her animations.

So she decided to use elements and papers from my kit, Elegance, to make my blinkies. And I'm just so happy with what she created. If you need blinkies made, Michelle is someone you want to talk to. Here's her blog, Times 2 Design, with samples of her work! I can highly recommend her!

And another new kit goes into the store at DigidesignResort - it's exclusive there for the month of June! The designers did this Mix & Match collection a couple of months ago, where we had a swatch and anyone who wanted to, created a mini kit, paper pack, or whatever, with the palette. Well, we had so much fun last time, we're doing it again this month! Just loved these colors.

It's called Soft Summer Rain, and has 13 richly textured and patterned papers, and 25 elements including splashes and umbrellas! The Mix & Match Collection is here.
